Jerzy Dybowski was born in 1959 in Lublin, Poland (the same city where chess legend Hermann Zukertort was born). He learnt to play chess at the age of 13, after the Spassky vs. Fischer match in Reykjavik in 1972. At the age of 17 Jerzy came 2nd in the Polish Juniors Championship of 1976. From 1974 to 1992 he played for “Start Lublin” in the Polish 1st League and at the same time coached juniors in the club. They won the league in 1982 and 1987. In 1991 Jerzy became a FIDE Master.
As a coach Jerzy assists the Essex Junior team, which his sons play for. Currently teaches in six primary schools in Newham. The game of chess has always been Jerzy’s passion and passing his knowledge onto children gives him a lot of satisfaction.
